The Story

Historical records date the first mention of Garitsa back to 1370 when it was referred to as Gastrades/Gastradika, named after the clay vessels crafted in the traditional pottery workshops—a naming convention echoed in the settlement of Gastouri in central Corfu. Another name, Kastrades, briefly emerged as a play on the word 'castle', while from 1878 onward, the area was known as Lykursi for several years, owing to the resettlement of approximately 600 inhabitants from the Lykursi region in Northern Epirus. If we were to embark on a journey back in time, we would undoubtedly be struck by the stark contrast between the island then and the island we know today, with Garitsa taking center stage. Garitsa once housed active pottery workshops that for generations catered to the demand for indispensable everyday objects. Since the 19th century, Garitsa has been a hub of industry on Corfu. Two factories—a rope works and a flour mill—employed those not engaged in fishing. During prosperous times, more than two thousand families depended on these factories. Life in Garitsa revolved around these establishments. Clocks were superfluous; the factories' sirens signaled shift changes and reminded children to head to school. In the shadow of the chimneys, residences both humble and grand were constructed, reminiscent of old-style tenements—sans elevators, naturally. Cafes would open before the break of dawn, catering to those commencing or concluding their workday. Tsipouro was served without the customary cold appetizers. Instead, it would be accompanied by three forkfuls of bourdeto or pastitsada. Yet, the advent of mechanization and industrialization in the 1950s eventually led to the gradual cessation of workshop operations, forever altering the face of Garitsa.

Today, decades after the factories fell silent, the 'inner' Garitsa retains the aura of a scene from a neo-realist film. The 'outer' Garitsa boasts a vast expanse of a grove, stretching from the foot toes of the town to Mon Repos. Garitsa's grove teem with life, year-round and irrespective of season, infusing even richer hues and melodies of joy into the already vibrant vegetation. Bicycles crisscross with children's prams, teenagers engage in basketball—even at midnight—while seniors partake in 'boccia', a variation of bowling and a Paralympic sport celebrated in fifty countries, though in Greece, it finds its home solely in Garitsa. Across the way, waves rhythmically caress the pavement —a promenade extending for kilometers. Anglers ply their reels with bait and tackle, roasted corn cobs sizzle on braziers, and individuals of all ages saunter or steal a romantic moment with the backdrop of Corfu's Old Fortress.

Everyone finds themselves here, or will, at least once, traverse the well-trod expanse of Garitsa’s suburb. This essence that defines Garitsa is etched indelibly in the memories of all who have ventured through its embrace—and not without good reason.

A plethora of choices await those seeking entertainment, be it savoring a cup of coffee or indulging in a delightful meal at one of the charming restaurants or inviting taverns in the vicinity. Over time, the neighborhood of Garitsa has garnered fascination due to the various names it has been bestowed.
